JON CRUDDAS

Jon Cruddas - new policy chief of Britain's opposition Labour Party.

On 15 May 2012, the UK Labour Party leader Ed Miliband appointed Labour MP Jon Cruddas as his policy chief, with a brief to draw up a radical programme for the next general election.

Cruddas has humble origins, but gained a Ph.D in philosophy and was a Visiting Fellow of the University of Wisconsin–Madison for a year from 1987.

He has said: "in our family the political heroes... were the Kennedys because they were Irish, there was Oscar Romero because liberation theology was quite a big thing, and Pope John."

He was one of over 100 Labour MPs to sign a letter demanding a recall of Parliament when the Blair government refused to call for an immediate stop to the Israeli bombing of Lebanon in 2006.

He has described himself as 'mistaken' over his decision to vote for British participation in the 2003 invasion of Iraq and has called for an enquiry to form "part of the reconciliation process".

He supported the right-wing David Miliband for the leadership of the Labour Party.
