Spy chief, murder, jihad, Bali Bomb

Munir

In June 2008, General Muchdi, formerly of the Indonesian Intelligence Agency (BIN), was arrested in connection with the murder of Indonesian human rights leader Munir. (Former spy arrested for human rights campaigner's murder /Indonesia's ex-security chief held over killing)

The leader of Laskar Jihad, an Islamic militia in Indonesia, has said that the recent arrest of Muchdi was politically motivated and part of an attempt to strike at pro-Islamic groups in the military. Indonesia: Ex-general's arrest an attack on Islam, says Muslim ...

In an interview with Adnkronos International (AKI), Djafar Umar Thalib, the leader of the Laskar Jihad militia, said that Muchdi's arrest in connection with the death of a prominent rights activist "had no legal basis".

Reportedly, Laskar Jihad was set up by the Indonesian military intelligence service to do its dirty work.

Former Garuda Indonesia pilot Pollycarpus Priyanto was jailed for 20 years in January 2008 for poisoning Munir with arsenic during a journey on Garuda from Jakarta to Amsterdam via Singapore.

Garuda's ex-boss, Indra Setiawan, was also jailed for one year as an accessory for helping with the plot.

Muchdi worked for General Hendropriyono, who was spy chief at the time of the first Bali Bombing and at the time of Munir's death.

On 3 July 2008, "anti-terror police arrested 10 suspected Muslim militants and seized a large cache of high-powered bombs, foiling a major attack targeting Westerners" in Jakarta.

Among those detained was a Singaporean who met several times with Osama bin Laden.

Most terror plots are suspected to be the work of agents of the security services of one country or another.
