Zimbabwe - Z$1.45 trillion for executive desks.

The following is an extract from: http://observer.guardian.co.uk/world/story/0,,1744942,00.html

April 2, 2006.

In Zimbabwe, inflation has now bypassed 1,000 per cent - the world's highest - and people have stopped counting bank notes, measuring the pile instead.

Harare City Council is planning to borrow Z$1.45 trillion to buy executive desks and 329 sedans and pick-ups for its managers.

In Bulawayo, 450 homes intended for some of the 700,000 families the government made homeless by bulldozing slums are being built without running water or sewerage.

Just a few weeks ago the long-suffering people were asked to raise Z$10 billion (about £60,000) to pay for Robert Mugabe's 82nd birthday celebrations.
