Allan Nairn, in an article in the Nation magazine, June 15 1998, wrote that "KOPASSUS Group 4, were, from the start of the abductions, in close and friendly liaison with U.S. intelligence".

In the article, Nairn interviewed Col. Chairawan, the Group 4 commander, who said that he directly dealt with Col. McFetridge of the D.I.A.

The training of KOPASSUS through the United States JCET (Joint Combined Exchange Training program) was criticised by Congress and human rights activists.
